The Erasmus Group of our school, the 7th Junior High School of Ioannina visited on Friday, February, 21st the ‘ZOGRAFEION – PENSIONIST’S HOME” .
It all happened in relation with our topic within the frame of our Erasmus-Project RESTORE4U, and especially for the parts SOCIETY and RESPECT.
These two words of our Acronym include all parts of the society we are living in and with them and our students are not allowed to be separated from this aspect of society.
We went to the ZOGRAFEION – PENSIONIST’S HOME in order to sing the carols to the elderly people there, to give them some presents and to spend some time with them. We talked with them, they asked us several things and students could see “live” how and where they spend their life there.
We think it was a good experience for our students and they enjoyed it even if there were some moments where they had to fight with their feelings of unknown, strange and awkward situations, but at the end this what they could take with them was the feeling of satisfaction because they offered something to people who need their presence and their support. Besides that, it was a mutual benefit, as also the elderly people there enjoyed the visit and it was a peasant “break” in their daily routine with a totally different age group they are used to live in.

SPECIAL EDUCATION – ARADIPPOU HIGH SCHOOL

During the last few years, on a global scale as well as in our own country, it has gradually become the norm that all students, no matter what their ethnic or social identity is, be allowed access to equal learning opportunities, in an inclusive scholar environment.
Within this framework of inclusion, during the 2017-2018 school year, Aradippou High School has offered our four special needs students the chance to work within the school grounds in a safe, productive and educational environment, offering these students knowledge that is vital for their ensuing lives.
Taking into consideration each student’s individual needs and characteristics, we, the teaching staff, have tried to tailor each student’s daily schedule to fit these specific and personal needs and interests.
To this end, the special education unit has functioned based on two daily schedules: Firstly, the students attended their respective favourite subjects (or subjects in which they had a natural inclination towards), in their own homerooms/classrooms. Secondly, they followed a predetermined special program within the unit, a program that adhered to a more interdisciplinary approach and philosophy. The subjects that were taught were: Modern Greek, Mathematics, House Economics, Art, Technology, Computers, Music and Physical Education.
At the beginning, the placement of some of these children was not easy. There were adaptation issues as well as problems with upholding the rules and regulations of the unit. However, through cooperation between the administration, teachers and helpers, and with great patience, we have managed to weather every situation and issue that arose, sometimes on a daily basis.
As far as the teaching component is concerned, it was carried out with the use of different methods and practices such as the use of visual aids, the creation of brief, pleasant dialogues, reading short passages or poems, completing exercise sheets, solving crossword and other puzzles, multiple choice questions, creative discussion and writing short essays or paragraphs. In this way, the children were given the opportunity to express themselves freely, to act, to cooperate with each other, to take initiatives, to cultivate, to relax but above all to feel safe.
Therefore, the effort of all of us has resulted in acquiring and cultivating basic reading, writing, communication skills, as well as aesthetic, social and practical skills. At the same time, we have struggled to strengthen their self-confidence and self-esteem. Certainly these children felt our school as their second home and were fully integrated with the rest of the student community.
Undoubtedly the special education unit at Aradippou High School demonstrated the full acceptance and respect of the diversity of individuals.

Paulo Azevedo inspires students of the AEAB “to embrace life from the front”

On 13th December, Paulo Azevedo, an actor and motivational speaker, was at the Escola S/3 Abade de Baçal after an invitation of the Religion subject to inspire students to embrace life. For about ninety minutes, Paulo Azevedo led the audience to a story of love, persistence and determination, showing that “there are no limits” to embracing life and discovering that it is possible to live it intensely, beyond fears, obstacles or falls.
Around 300 students, of several cycles and school years, who attended the lecture, Paulo Azevedo challenged students to understand that the acceptance and appreciation of personal differences is the first step to a life in permanent overcoming and as essential condition for happiness.
In a very genuine and touching way, Paulo Azevedo spoke of dreams, strength and fragility, a testimony of life that shows that “the impossible is within us” and that “being different is not being inferior.”
Paulo Azevedo also invited the young people to ask personal questions, and with great simplicity and openness, answered their doubts and questions.
The meeting culminated in the usual “family photo”.

On 30th January, the teachers of Religion and Spanish invited students from all ages to disseminate the values of peace and non-violence in the Agrupamento de Escolas Abade Baçal. The initiative was carried out to celebrate the Non-Violence and Peace School Day. This date was established in 1964 by the Spanish poet and educator Llorenç Vidal to honour the memory of the great Indian pacifist Mahatma Gandhi. As a way of promoting an authentic education for peace, it was accepted at an international level in order to lead students to develop a critical thinking about human relationships based on tolerance, respect and non-violence.
In the schools EB 1,2,3 Augusto Moreno and ES/3 Abade Baçal, the word peace and hundreds of messages were filled with different colours that ilustrated that peace spirit.
